Curly Hair Journey
My Curly Hair Journey
As girls we grow up wanting to alter
our hair or appearance. Whether you have straight hair and want curly or you
have curly and want straight hair. It’s the trend, as tweens and teens we want
to look our best or follow what everybody else is doing. Did you ever stop to think,
“I’m just going to stick with my natural curly hair”? We age, become busy, want
more sleep, so we decide one day enough is enough! I am going to start wearing
my hair natural curls! That was me, a 26-year-old woman who always followed the
fads in high school, who hated my curly hair and would always straighten it. I thought
I looked better that way and believed others did too, but why was I doing that
to please others? Partly because I was young and naïve.
I’ve got, “I like your hair better
straight” so many times and being of age that doesn’t bother me anymore because
I LOVE my big curly hair. No matter what anyone had said or keeps saying I am
still going to embrace my hair. That’s when I put my foot down and woke up one
day during COVID Quarantine and said, “I’m going to chop my hair to create
curly bangs.” That was the best decision I had ever made. I am no stylist, but I
could tell you that my confidence level spiked up to a hundred. I had that motivation
to keep pursuing my curly hair journey, I had it before but this time I had
that boost of confidence that I was craving.
After, completely undergoing a new look I decided to do research on how to properly take care of my hair and what kind of products work well for me. I am a proud 3B and 3C curl type. If you are wondering what curl type you are you can go to any curly hair product website and a hand full of them will have quizzes for you to take to determine your curl type. That’s one way I began my journey was finding out what curls I have. Most curly hair products do go off your curl type so check them out. Like me you can have multiple curly types for instance the bottom of my hair is so much curlier than per say the top of my head. I would recommend starting there and really finding out your hair’s personality.
Once you have determined what your
curl type is then it is time for products! This is where it kind of gets a little
tricky because of ingredients. You always want to go with NO SULFATES, NO
PARABENS, CLEAN PRODUCTS, NO SILICONES, and mostly all-natural
ingredients. We do not want anything that can potentially strip your hair or damage
your locks. Curls want moisture, no heat, and TLC (tender love and care). Make
sure to read labels, you know your hair better than anybody else does. For example,
my hair is dry, frizzy, and curly so I tend to look for anything that says
frizz free, moisture, and curly hold. Upon my journey I realized my dryness was
due to washing in hot water. BIG MISTAKE!! Don’t do what I did. It’s okay to
wash in hot water, but not your hair. Curly hair needs moisture so when it’s
wash day do yourself a favor and wash with cold water.
Lastly, I am going to end with sharing some styling tools for your curls. After showering I would recommend using a microfiber towel to dry your hair or if you do not have one you can use a cotton t-shirt to wrap your hair in. This is because you want to keep the moisture in your curls locked in to resist frizz. Another tool you could use while in and out the shower is a wide tooth comb. This is one of my favorites because it helps divide your curls and relieve any knots that you may have. I love wide tooth combs and hair picks! Hair picks are used when your hair is FULLY dried, and you want to break up any other curls that may be stuck to one another, also to enhance the volume of your hair. These two will save your hair! If you’re like me and love a big fluff of curls, then use that pick girl! The last one I am going to share with you is a curly hair diffuser, if you haven’t seen one before they almost look like little fingers for your hair that you can get anywhere . A curly hair diffuser attaches onto your blow dryer and release air to help dry and bring volume to your hair. I haven’t quite mastered this one yet, but I know that it will be magical!
I hope that you gathered some
valuable tips into starting your own curly hair journey! Be confident in your
own skin! Love yourself, it’s never too late to start now. Love your curls! Don’t
forget to share your curly hair journey with me!
