Curly Hair Tips

As we all know having curly is a blessing, but it takes patience to have a set routine. I am going to be discussing some curly tips today; what not to do and what to do, what works and what doesn’t work. Some might be new to you if you are beginning your curly hair journey and some might be just a repeat of what we already know. There are some cool curly hair tips that are life saving as well so follow me as we get started, let’s get curly!

Curly Tip #1: Change Up Your Product

Changing products specifically for season changes. If you are changing your foundation every Winter, you should be changing your curly hair product to target the weather. For Summer you want to go with something that keep the humidity and frizz at bay. Depending where you live, alter your curly hair products by season. Winter isn’t as terrible but remember there is rain throughout Autumn and Winter.

Curly Tip #2: Wash in Cold Water

Never shower in HOT water! I say this a lot, but this is so serious. You don’t want dry, brittle hair. Your curls cannot collect moisture if you’re showering in hot water. There are downsides for showering in hot water such as, dandruff and frizz.  Cool to cold water is best for curly hair to collect and hydrate.

Curly Tip #3: Bushing Hair While Wet

NEVER brush your hair when dry. Unless you want to look like Mustafa from the Lion King, so be it. I can guarantee that most curly haired women know this already, but it helps to emphasize on brushing hair. Brush only on damp and wet hair.

Curly Tip #4: Don’t Dry Your Hair

Use a cotton t-shirt or microfiber towel to wrap your hair in. Why? Because it locks in the moisture before you apply your hair product. When wrapping your hair do not squeeze or dry your hair. The more water left in your hair the better.

Curly Tip #5: Shampoo Only Your Scalp

Shampoo your scalp ONLY! Curly hair wants to be lavished in conditioner and leave-ins. We need protect our curls, please don’t wash all your hair with shampoo. Technically the rest of your hair will be cleaned once you wash your shampoo out so don’t panic.

Curly Tip #6: Use Wide Tooth Comb

Using a wide tooth comb in and out the shower can help to part your curls and detangle. Only use the comb when hair is wet, never dry.

Curly Tip #7: Blanket Your Hair

Many women do not protect their hair while they sleep. Using a silk head scarf or wrap is best for protecting your curls while you sleep. Why is it beneficial? It keeps all your natural hair oil in your hair rather than cotton which takes it away. If you’re not using anything to protect your hair, then you’ll notice your bed head hair leaving an imprint in the morning.

Curly Tip #8: Do Not Over Wash

Do not over wash your hair! Over washing can take away from the natural oils your hair produces. Curly hair needs these natural oils to maintain the perfect curl. It also strips your hair and makes it brittle just like washing in hot water. Depending on how often you like to wash I would recommend washing every 3 days or more. Have a set wash day routine.

            Curly Tip #9: Leave-Ins Are Your B.F.F.

Use leave-in conditioners religiously.  Some are used before a shower, during a shower, or after. No matter how they’re used please use these to hydrate your hair as well as keeping your curls healthy. You should use leave-in conditioner mask at least twice a week, I would use these at the beginning of the week and another at the end of a long week.

            Curly Tip #10: Volume, Volume!

If you love volume like I do, using a hair pick helps. ONLY use the hair pick when your hair is fully dried and never wet. Hair picks are also used to break curls apart if you have thick curls. So do not forget to “fluff” up your hair. Diffusing your hair is best for volume too! Using both results in a tremendous amount of volume. Volume is your best friend curly curls.
