Porosity Curiosity

Porosity Curiosity

On today’s blog I am going to be giving you the run down about hair porosity. What is porosity? Porosity is how much moisture your hair retains. Everyone’s hair retains moisture very differently, which is why there are three categories for porosity. We have low, normal, and high porosity. I’ll be sharing how to find what type of porosity you have, what to look for, and how to care for each one. Let’s get curly!

Now you are wondering which category your hair lands at. There are many tests that you could do to tell if you have low or high porosity. The one I like is to gather a section of your hair and spritz water onto the section. Watch closely to see what happens to your hair afterward. If your hair soaks up the water then you have high porosity, but if the water is sitting on top of your hair then you have low porosity. Another test that is quite common is the water in a clear glass. You are going to fill a glass of water (preferably cool) and if you shed then pick one hair or just take one piece of hair and drop it into the glass for 3 minutes. If your hair is at the top, then you have low porosity. If your hair is right in the middle and not quite at the bottom, then you have normal porosity. Lastly, if your hair reaches the bottom of the glass then you have high porosity.

How to care for Low Porosity Hair:

1.     Apply products to damp hair

2.     Apply products evenly onto hair

3.     Do deep conditioning treatments using heat such as steam or warm towel to help product and hair to meet moisture.

4.     Get rid of build up by doing an ACV (Apple Cider Vinegar) rinse

5.     Use less protein

6.     Use light oils such as grapeseed oil or argon oil.

7.     Stay away from silicones

How to care for Normal Porosity Hair:

1.     Keep deep conditioning

2.     Simple, keep doing what you are doing and don’t change a thing

How to take care of High Porosity Hair:

1.     Incorporate regular protein treatments

2.     Use protective styles such as buns, braids, and twists.

3.     Avoid heat

4.     Air dry

5.     Rinse in ONLY cold water

What type of porosity are you?
