Curl Training 101
Curl Training 101
The curly hair community talks a lot about curl
training and some curly haired women are against it. The truth is that some
curls need a little bit more definition than others and it is okay to want to
curl train your hair. At the beginning of your curly hair journey your curls
have gone through so much and the definition of them are not there right away.
When you want to fix something, it needs to be destroyed or ruined enough to
"fix" it. I will be discussing the types of curl training and how to
do them.
The picture
above shows some myths about what others may think of your curl training. They
might say that your hair is not entirely curly because you need to curl train
or that maybe when you do curl train that your curls are fake. None of which
are true, some curls need that extra guidance.
There are
many different types of curl training, but I will highlight on 4 types of curl
training. To start off there are 2 types of finger coiling. The first is when you
grab a strand of hair and start to twist or twirl, working your way throughout your hair
until you’ve reached the top of your hair. This type of coil will give you
those tight curls.
The second type of finger coil is for loose curls, not so
tight, but also not for waves. I like to clump these types of curls when I am
feeling brave. How to get these type of curls: You will start off grabbing a strand of
your hair and instead of twisting you will start at the end of your strand, using
your fingers to roll upward toward your scalp. Once you have reached your
scalp slowly let your fingers down and you should have one beautiful curl. Now
working your way all around until you have finished. Viola! You have finger
coiled!
Another way to curl train your hair is by using rollers.
Sounds familiar? Yes, rollers girl! It’s 2021 and the curly hair community has
brought them into light again. They never left, but just have been in the dark. So
here we are shinning light on them again. I have not used them because well I do
not have them. (Lol) The previous finger training is similar in a way except
you are using fingers. This way is much easy for you to dry your hair with
rollers in or just leave the rollers in overnight.
Lastly, this method of curl training might have to be my
favorite, but I have not had the pleasure of trying this. I’ve seen so many
wonderful results around the curly hair community and they are magnificent! Now
that I have your attention, it is called the Denman Brush. What is it? It's is a curl defining
brush, detangling brush, and used for styling. I have seen the handle being
used for curl defining purposes. I do not have the correct “training” on this
method but if you do, click on the link above!

coiling, I have videos up on Instagram @fishinn4chris. Feel free to try them
