Protein VS Moisture
Protein VS Moisture
Protein and moisture often get misinterpreted
by many. How can you tell if your hair is lacking any of the two or what to use
to regain one or the other. That is where I come in to give you some tips and
tricks on how to determine what is best for your hair. It took me awhile to
learn about this topic and here I am! Ready to guide you on your future curly hair endeavors.
WHAT IS PROTEIN? WHAT IS MOISTURE?
What is protein? Protein helps bind your cuticle
layer of your curls to make them healthier. Just like how we need protein for our
body, our curls need protein as well. Moisture on the other hand is when your
hair is well balanced with hydration. When our body is thirsty, what do we do
to hydrate ourselves? Drink water or even coconut water, whichever may be your
favorite. Same with hair, your curls need protein and moisture to be well balanced
and healthy.
HOW CAN I TELL IF MY HAIR LACKS
PROTEIN OR MOISTURE?
Identify what your hair lacks is
much simpler than you think. If your curls are not defined and limp, then you need
protein in your hair. They will look almost loose, stressed, and “dry” looking
but not feel dry. On the other hand, to find moisture is when your hair is
FRIZZY!!! I do not mean a frizz crown, but I mean your whole set of curls are frizzy.
Not only that but with frizz comes the feeling of dryness. Making sure to identify
the moisture is crucial. You absolutely need that balance of hydration to your
hair. Before choosing, identify what your curls need first.
HOW DO I GET PROTEIN IN MY HAIR?
Protein can be found in many hair products, of
course. However, which ones to get is fairly simple. Some curl definers already
have protein in them while others do not. There are many hair mask or deep conditioners
that have protein as well. Products such as Mielle Orangics, Briogeo, Shea
Moisture, and Curlsmith are just a few that offer protein in their products or
deep conditioners.
HOW DO I GET MOISTURE IN MY HAIR?
Just like protein, moisture is in many
products as well. Whether you like hair mask or a great leave-in moisture is in
many of your favorite products. Hair care products such as Not Your Mother’s,
Ouidad, Curlsmith, and Curls are all great for moisture.
DO NOT OVERDUE IT!
So, we have identified what protein and moisture
are and how to tell them apart. It is very important that you do not put too
much protein in your hair. Look out for which products contain protein and
ensure that you aren’t apply another product with protein. Too much of this
will start building up and your hair will end up being heavy or even itchy.
Just like applying too many products your hair tends to get itchy because of
the build-up, well same in this case. Be extremely cautious.
Moisture overload is a thing as
well. So much moisture can cause your hair to look greasy and stringy. Look out
for too much moisture in your products and hair. Do not get overwhelmed by all
the information. Everything takes a couple tries. It took me awhile, you can do
it!
